The Washington State Law Enforcement Memorial is located on the Capitol grounds in Olympia, Washington. The Memorial overlooks Capitol Lake and is a place for quiet reflection. The Memorial is open to the public 365 days a year and is free to everyone at all times.

Who Does the Memorial Honor?

Every officer’s passing is tragic and deserving of recognition and support. The Washington State Law Enforcement Memorial honors officers who have made the ultimate sacrifice while serving in the line of duty per WSLEM Criteria.

To ensure the integrity of the Memorial, our process involves a thorough review of each officer’s passing, including official reports, witness accounts, and statements. Every name is carefully evaluated by both the Memorial Committee and Board of Directors before being approved for inclusion.

Our Journey

Our journey started in 1995 when a group of law enforcement officers and survivors - inspired by the national memorial - decided to create a local version. The team worked for almost ten years to fund and build a memorial worthy of Washington’s fallen.

The entity set up to create the Memorial became Behind the Badge Foundation. It is now the largest after-event provider in the state, delivering support and resources to other survivors, officers, and agencies.
